Billings Ovulation Method

What is the Billings method?

The Billings method is a form of 'biological' birth control which relies on a method for determining when ovulation occurs. It requires training which can normally be provided through your doctor or family planning center.

The billings method requires that a woman observe her vaginal discharge daily. The subtle changes in texture, color and quantity indicate the times of ovulation. Because sperm need fertile mucus to survive, couples practicing the Billings method learn to abstain from intercourse during the fertile period of a woman's natural cycle.

How effective is the Billings method?

The effectiveness of this method depends primarily on how well trained you are to examine the discharge, and therefore the success rate is different from woman to woman.

How is the Billings method practiced?

You should go to a family planning center or a physician if you wish to learn this method of birth control. The steps are too complex and individualized to print in a general guide to birth control.
